What Should the Sizing and Fit of Your Corset Be?

Latex corsets offer the same figure-hugging benefits as traditional fabric options, but they require a different approach. While conventional corsets require you to wear sizes two to four inches below your actual waist size, the unique, form-fitting nature of latex pulls and holds your shape rather than constricting your waist.

Order your exact waist measurement. Sizing down compromises the garment’s structural integrity and distorts its sleek, tailored aesthetic.

Glossary of Essential Corsetry Terms

Before dressing, it is vital to understand the anatomy of your garment.

  • Busk: The front closure system consisting of metal stays, usually featuring loops on one side and studs on the other.
  • Boning: The internal structural rods (typically spiral steel boning or flexible plastic stays when used with latex) that provide the garment’s shape, posture, and support.
  • Overbust: A corset style designed to encompass and support the bust, ending seamlessly at the top of the décolletage.
  • Underbust: A corset style that sits just below the bust line, requiring the wearer to pair it with a separate top or bra, or wear it exposed for a bold styling choice.

Step-by-Step Corset Lacing Guide

Lacing a corset requires patience and ideally a mirror for visibility. Follow these steps for a flawless fit:

  1. Prepare the Garment: Loosen the laces at the back of the corset significantly. Do not undo the knot at the end of the laces; simply pull the ‘X’ crosses loose to create enough slack to wrap the corset around your torso.
  2. Position the Busk: Wrap the corset around your body and align the busk at the exact centre front of your torso. Fasten the busk clips starting from the middle, then secure the top and bottom clips.
  3. Adjust the Placement: Shift the garment so it sits correctly on your natural waist, hips, and (if applicable) bust. The waist line (the middle part of the lacing) must align with the smallest part of your waist.
  4. Begin Lacing: Reach behind you and gently pull the laces. Work the slack from the top of the corset down to the middle waist loops.
  5. Secure the Bottom: Next, work the slack from the bottom of the corset up to the middle waist loops.
  6. Tie and Set: Once the lace-up portion is perfectly aligned with the smallest part of your waist and the tension is even, pull the central loops together firmly and tie them securely into a bow.

How Long to Wear a Corset

When you first put on your latex corset, avoid lacing it to its tightest setting immediately. While latex corsets are less constrictive than traditional historic styles, they remain close-fitting, highly structured garments.

Once you have settled into the sensation, a latex corset can be worn without discomfort or support issues, so there’s plenty of time for fun.

A Brief History of Corsets

While the modern silhouette may evoke Victorian or Edwardian imagery, the corset’s lineage stretches much further back. The earliest known examples appear in Minoan artwork from Crete, where both men and women used linen and wool wraps to define the torso. These ancient precursors were often status symbols, intricately adorned with silver and gold threads.

Historically, the corset has been a site of both controversy and craftsmanship. Often mischaracterised solely as a restrictive tool of the patriarchy, many fashion historians now argue that the experience was far more nuanced, offering women a sense of sartorial structure and personal empowerment.

The Modern Renaissance

The transition of the corset from hidden foundation to bold outerwear began in earnest during the 1970s and 80s:

  • Vivienne Westwood: Pioneered the historicist punk aesthetic, reclaiming the corset as a symbol of rebellion.
  • Jean-Paul Gaultier: Redefined the garment on the global stage, most notably with the iconic pink satin corset designed for Madonna’s 1991 Blonde Ambition tour.
  • Couture Integration: Designers such as Thierry Mugler, Stella McCartney, and Tom Ford have since subverted the corset’s traditional role, layering it over shirts or styling it as a standalone sculptural piece.

Today’s designer corsetry benefits from significant advancements in boning and materials. At Westward Bound, we use the unique properties of high-grade latex to provide that signature hourglass definition with a level of contemporary comfort and flexibility that historical reed or whalebone could never achieve.
